چکیده

To appreciate better how cichlids segregate along the trophic, spatial and temporal dimensions, it is necessary to understand the cichlids’ body design, and its role in resource partitioning. We investigatedbody shape variation, quantiŽ ed using landmark-basedgeometricmorphometrics, among cichlid species belonging to algal and zooplankton feeders coexisting along the rocky shores of Lake Malawi, in order to elucidate the adaptive signiŽ cance of body shape. SigniŽ cant differences were found within zooplankton feeders in which Copadichromis borleyi had a shorter gape, smaller eyes and shorter caudal peduncle relative to Ctenopharynx pictus and, within algal feeders, Labeotropheus fuellebornihad a shorter and inferior subterminal gape, and shorter head relative to Petrotilapiagenalutea. Variation among species is discussed with reference to trophic and feeding microhabitat differentiation which enables us to appreciate the role of body shape in enhancing ecological separation, and thus leads to coexistence among cichlid species.

Variation in body size and trophic morphology within and among genetically differentiated populations of the cichlid fish, Metriaclima zebra, from Lake Malawi

1. The cichlid fish Metriaclima zebra, common in Lake Malawi, feeds by filtering plankton from the water and by brushing items from sediment covered substrata. It inhabits isolated rocky reefs among which community structure, resource availability and gene pools are likely to differ. We speculated that body size and trophic morphology of M. zebra might vary concomitantly. 2. We quantified the e...

Variation in habitat preference and population structure among three species of the Lake Malawi cichlid genus Protomelas.

Several studies have demonstrated strong population structuring over small distances in the rocky-shore mbuna cichlid fishes from Lake Malawi, suggesting the potential for allopatric speciation. However, many endemic Lake Malawi cichlids are neither mbuna, nor confined to rocky shores. Using microsatellites, we investigated the population structure in three species of the non-mbuna genus Protom...

Trophic interactions among three elasmobranch species coexisting in the Oman Sea: implications for resource partitioning

In this study, trophic interactions were studied among three elasmobranches including Iago omanensis, Rhinobatos punctifer and Torpedo sinuspersici coexisting in the depth ranging from 50 to 100 meters in the Oman Sea (Sistan and Balochistan waters). A total of 238 specimens were collected using industrial bottom trawlers of ‘FERDOWS’ during spring and summer,2014 and their stomach contents wer...

Functional signi cance of variation in trophic morphology within feeding microhabitat-differentiated cichlid species in Lake Malawi

Shape variation in trophicmorphologybetween species in two trophic guilds (zooplankton and epilithic algal feeders) was investigated using landmark-based geometric morphometrics. Three disarticulated bone elements from the head region were examined; the neurocranium, the premaxilla and lower jaw. From separate analyses of each bone element, signiŽ cant shape variationwas identiŽ ed between spec...

Phylogenomic analysis of Lake Malawi cichlid fishes: Further evidence that the three-stage model of diversification does not fit.

Adaptive radiations could often occur in discrete stages. For instance, the species flock of ∼1000 species of Lake Malawi cichlid fishes might have only diverged once between rocky and sandy environments during the initial stage of their diversification. All further diversification within the rock-dwelling (mbuna) or sand-dwelling (utaka) cichlids would have occurred during a subsequent second ...
